Common Myths About Heating

Winter is coming, which means that it’s the perfect time to debunk the common myths about heating.

The weather is starting to change, and slowly but surely, it’s getting colder out. If you haven’t already, you may even need to turn on your heater. Here in San Antonio, we don’t have to deal with the cold like they do in other areas of the country, but it pays to know how to efficiently heat your home for those cold nights ahead, no matter how few and far between they may be. Unfortunately, there are many myths out there about heating your home, and the experts at Apex Home Energy Savings are here to set the record straight.

Myth #1. A wood fireplace can help you keep your home warm.

Don’t get us wrong, fireplaces are definitely cozy, but it’s the warm part where they are lacking. Fireplaces do provide some level of heat in your home, but they send far more of it up the chimney than they do into the rest of your home. Plus, wood is expensive, and your fireplace can actually steal heat from inside your home for combustion.

Myth #2. You’ll heat your home faster if you turn up the thermostat more.

When you come home to a frigid house, you may be tempted to turn up your thermostat higher so that you can warm your house faster, but your thermostat doesn’t work that way. Your thermostat can either be on or off, and there’s no setting that will make your thermostat heat your house any faster. Simply put, if you turn your thermostat up, it will stay on for longer and use more energy, but it won’t make your house warmer faster.

Myth #3. Leave your heater on at the same temperature all the time to save energy.

There is a common misconception that, if you turn your heater on and off, it will have to work harder in order to make up for the cold air. However, that simply isn’t the case. Turning your heater down (or off if it’s warm enough outside) when you aren’t home is one of the best things that you can do to save energy. One easy way to ensure that your heater gets turned down is to install and program an automatic thermostat in your home.

Myth #4. The larger your heater is, the more comfortable you’ll be.

Whether your heater is too big or too small for your house, it can lead to trouble. It’s always best to equip your home with the appropriate sized heater. If your heater is too big for your home, you probably won’t be able to tell in the comfort level, but you will most likely notice a much bigger energy bill. If your heater isn’t the right size for your home, it could also shorten its life, because it is operating inefficiently.

Myth #5. Closing vents can help to improve your heater’s efficiency.

If you have rooms in your home that you don’t spend much time in, you may be under the misconception that, by closing the vents to those rooms, you can redirect the heat into the rooms you do use and save more energy. However, your HVAC system was not designed to heat one room at a time; it was designed to keep your entire house at a steady temperature. If specific rooms in your home are cold because the vents are closed, your system will just work harder in order to maintain a consistent temperature throughout your house.

At Apex Home Energy Savings, we can help you save more and stay warm this winter. Whether you need HVAC repairs, window replacement or attic insulation installation, we can help. Contact us today for your free energy audit in San Antonio.

"APEX really helped me the first time they came out. I was interested in solar, but already singed a contract with a different company. The other company gave me a bad feeling. APEX helped me get out of the deal and cancel the overly priced solar. I'm so thankful! APEX gave me an energy audit and found my a/c unit to be over 10 years old. I decided to replace my a/c with new energy star rated units. Seth and Bryan brought peace to my situation and I feel like they have given me more assistance than most companies are willing to do. Highly recommend." - Carolyn T
